UPDATE: Result – Roger Federer beat Michael Llodra 7-5, 6-3
Roger Federer will play Feliciano Lopez in the second round in Dubai.
Lopez has lost all 9 previous matches he played against the great Swiss champion, however at the age of 30 he has seemingly reached his prime, and his ranking of 15 is his all time high. He’ll know it is “now or never” and I expect a bit of a battle and a good game of tennis.

Rafael Nadal played very badly yesterday and will hope to improve a good deal against Feliciano Lopez. He has a 7-2 lead in the head to head.
Roger Federer has beaten Richard Gasquet of France on 8 straight occasions from nine matches, with the Frenchman having to look back to their first meeting in 2005 for inspiration.

UPDATE: Rafael Nadal beat Marcos Baghdatis, 6-1, 6-3 and Roger Federer overcame Feliciano Lopez 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.
Rafa had won six straight wins over the Cypriot, until Baghdatis managed to knock him out of Indian Wells last year at the quarterfinal stage, making the head 6-1. Tough first match for Nadal, but he should pull through.
Federer will start his tournament with a match against the in-form Feliciano Lopez, who arrives fresh from the final in Belgrade where he lost to Djokovic.

Roger Federer has only played Juan Monaco once before – back in 2007, when he beat the Argentine 2 sets to 1.
Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez are good friends on and off the court, but Rafa will be keen to advance, and keep the head to head firmly in his favour (currently 6-2).

Davis Cup - Link to Belgium vs Spain tie official website
UPDATE: Doubles match over, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco defeated Xavier Malisse and Olivier Rochus, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3
Having helped Spain to a 2-0 lead in the Davis Cup rubber on the first day, Rafa will next play Xavier Malisse on Sunday.
If the doubles team of Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco win today, then there will be nothing but pride at stake, in which case the match will be shortened to three sets.
If the Spanish pair lose, Nadal will have the opportunity to claim the rubber in five sets on Sunday.
R1: Fernando Verdasco defeated Xavier Malisse, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1
R2: Rafael Nadal defeated Ruben Bemelmans, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2

Nadal vs Federer (Head to Head 14-8)
Singles ranking in brackets, Head to head with Nadal or Federer
The main early obstacle for Nadal seems to be the third round where he will face the winner of Marin Cilic or John Isner. Cilic beat Rafa in their only previous meeting.
Federer’s second round match will be a tough one on paper – Gilles Simon beat him in their only earlier encounters, though his form in recent months has not been so predictable.
After that, the semis will probably be where the real work kicks in. Rafa should (on paper) meet Soderling or Murray – two of the best players on hard court over recent years. Federer against Djokovic will also be fascinating.
Let the action begin – and begin it will on Monday 17th January when Roger Federer will play his first round match. He is third on the Rod Laver court, so will probably come on some time after 2pm local time, 1am GMT. Rafael Nadal will have to wait until Tuesday 18th January.
Rafael Nadal faces Feliciano Lopez in his challenge to reach the quarterfinals.
Rafa has a 5-2 lead in the head to head over his fellow Spaniard, although Feli had the better of their last meeting when he knocked him out at the quarterfinals in Queens this year.
I do not think Nadal will allow the same to happen. I pick that he will win in three straight sets.

Rafa made it through to his first final in over five months, again with a little assistance from an injured opponent. This time it was Feliciano Lopez who succumbed to problems in his foot, and Nadal was through, 6-1, 3-0 and retired.
Nadal has a 4-2 lead over Davydenko in all time match ups, but it is important to note that the world ranked number 8 Russian has had the better of the Mallorcan in their past two encounters on hard courts (Paris and Miami 2008). So I expect a tough match today, and we are going to see whether Rafa can really sustain a top performance. I pick Rafa in three.
The match starts at 4:30pm local time, that’s 8:30 am GMT, 9:30 am in UK , 10:30am in most of western Europe and 4:30am in New York.
