Cincinnati Finals – Djokovic vs Murray

Murray and Djokovic - Link to Head to Head stats

UPDATE – Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-0 after the Serb retired with a sore shoulder.

Can Novak Djokovic continue with his absolutely phenomonal year and make it a 100% success rate at Masters events in 2011 (he did not play in Monte-Carlo, which Rafa won), or will Andy Murray overcome the great Serb, who leads 6-3 in the head to head?

It will surely to be get a snapshot of how big the difference really is amongst the top four – I’m going to step out on a limb and predict an upset – Murray in straight sets.

Why? All winning streaks end, and Nole’s time is up – no rhyme nor reason, just a feeling :)

Cincinnati Semifinals – Murray vs Fish, Djokovic vs Berdych

Mardy Fish - Link to ATP Profile

Results: Andy Murray beat Mardy Fish 6-3, 7-6 and Novak Djokovic beat Tomas Berdych 7-5, and retired

Mardy Fish has reigned it over Andy Murray in recent times, having won the last three match ups and leading 4-3. Given Murray’s inconsistency this year, and Fish’s great run of form, I back the American to repeat last year’s final appearance.

Novak Djokovic on the other hand – who would dare to bet against him?! He struggled yesterday in the beginning against Monfils, but came back hard to take out the match, and as his 6-1 lead over Tomas Berdych indicates, he should also be good for yet another 2011 Masters final.

Cincinnati – Nadal vs Fish, Federer vs Berdych

Mardy Fish - Link to ATP Profile

Results – Mardy Fish beat Rafa Nadal 6-3, 6-4, Tomas Berdych beat Roger Federer 6-2, 7-6.

Rafael Nadal has won all six previous matches against Mardy Fish. He will hope to build on a tough win over Fernando Verdasco yesterday to go one better than last year when he went out in the quarters to Marcos Baghdatis.

Roger Federer had some troubles against Tomas Berdych in 2010, losing two of the three matches they played, though he leads 9-3 in the all time head to head.

Cincinnati – Nadal vs Verdasco, Federer vs Blake

James Blake - Link to ATP Profile

Results – Rafael Nadal beat Fernando Verdasco, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 and Roger Federer beat James Blake.

Rafael Nadal will play fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, who he has beaten in every one of the eleven matches they have played before – including that 5h10m classic semifinal in 2009 when Rafa went on to win the Australian Open.

Roger Federer has played James Blake 10 times before, with the American’s only win coming at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.  Federer must be solid favourite to take this out in straight sets, even though Blake has played well recently.

Cincinnati – Nadal vs Benneteau

Result – Rafael Nadal beat Julien Benneteau 6-4, 7-5.

The first time Rafael Nadal played Julien Benneteau was back in 2004, when the Frenchman thrashed Rafa on carpet, 6-3, 6-0. Since then, Nadal has won twice, with the last time being here at the Cincinnati Masters last year.

In theory, an easy match, but Rafa’s tank of confidence seems to be running dry, and I’ll be nervously watching to see if he can take this one.

Cincinnati – Federer vs Del Potro

Results – Roger Federer beat Juan Martin Del Potro, 6-3, 7-5. Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez also won, beating Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5

Roger Federer has played Juan Martin Del Potro eight times, winning the first six times but losing their two most recent matches. Those losses – the US Open final in 2009 and in the round robin of the London tour finals came before Del Potro’s extended absence through injury.

Rafael Nadal also debuts in Cincinnati, but in doubles only today as his first singles match (against Julien Benneteau) will be on Wednesday. He’ll join his friend Marc Lopez to play a pair of Serbs (as if he has not had enough of that nationality yet!) – Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki.

Cincinnati Draw – Can we dream of a final?

Given their early exits in Montreal, is it premature to hope that Nadal and Federer can make the final in Cincinnati?

Well the draw at least allows for this possibility, though Nadal and Federer have some difficult matches to win if they are to progress so far. Here are their potential partners (based on seed/form):

Rafael Nadal:

2nd Round: Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
3rd Round: Fernando Verdasco
Quarterfinal: Mardy Fish
Semifinal: Andy Murray
Final: Novak Djokovic

Roger Federer:

2nd Round: Juan Martin Del Potro
3rd Round: Viktor Troicki
Quarterfinal: Tomas Berdych
Semifinal: Novak Djokovic
Final: Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic has a better draw, let’s hope that he is drained from all that tennis at Montreal :) . He’ll probably have to beat Gael Monfils to reach that potential semifinal against Roger Federer.

Nadal and Federer – The End of an Era?

At Montreal, Nadal went out in his first match and Federer in his second. Can anyone even remember that happening before?

I think that at the first Masters event of the North America tour most of us expected repeat semifinals featuring the top four of Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and Murray.

But just a few days in, and three of the four have been sent packing. Only Nole is still standing.

So with Federer yet to win a Major or Masters in 2011, and Djokovic almost unbeatable, can we pronounce the Nadal and Federer era definitively dead?

Well, in the sense of two players totally dominating a sport, as Roger and Rafa did from 2006-2010, probably, yes, that history making epoch has ended.

It’s been a great run, and in the future we will probably look back and be amazed how long it lasted rather than at how it inevitably faded to an end. We’ll treasure forever the great memories including the incredible Wimbledon, French and Australian Open finals and unique friendship in rivalry .

But in another sense, we can hope that the era still has some legs.

Federer has another Major or two in him, and although we will see more downs than we have been spoiled to experience in the past, there will still be the ups – to savour not just for rarity, but especially for the grit and skill that will be needed to beat younger upstarts.

And Nadal is far from a done force. Provided he can manage his calendar to limit the pounding on his body, we can expect to see a more dosified and focussed Rafa sharpening his game to face the new challenge that is Novak Djokovic. I think we can hope for a minimum of 4 or 5 more good years, highlighted by many great matches with the Serb, as well as a few scorchers still with Roger, Andy and some yet-to-be-discovered young talents.

So for now, I’m putting this Montreal disappointment behind me, and looking forward to see our champs rested and back in the game come Cincinnati and Flushing Meadows.

How about you?

Cincinnati Champion – Roger Federer!

Congratulations Roger for a well earned victory today over Mardy Fish, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-4.

It will perhaps count as one of the easier titles Fed has won, given short time on the court including one walk over, but  Fish kept in the game and made it very, very tight. He ran him very close, claiming the first set and pushing him all the way in the second with a follow up tie break.

Finally in the third Fed’s dominance snuck through and he was able to claim the Cincinnati crown for the fourth time.

Federer has thus broken a long drought, and claimed his first Masters title (his 17th) since winning this title in Cincinnati last year.

Since then he’d had a run of three finals losses this year.

Roger now goes fifth in the list of ATP titles (63), even with Bjorn Borg.

A great warm up for the US Open, and hopefully a prelude of more great things to come for our champion!

Cincinnati Masters Final – Federer vs Fish

UPDATE – Federer beat Fish 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-4, to win his fourth Cincinnati Masters title

Mardy Fish - Link to ATP Profile

Roger Federer has the chance to win his 17th Masters Series title today – which would match Andre Agassi as second on the all time list, behind none other than Rafael Nadal on 18. That would add a bit of spice to the head to head by age comparison (click for details).

Federer has played Mardy Fish six times before, with the only win for the American coming when they met in Indian Wells in 2008 (their most recent meeting).

Fish has had a great tournament, having beaten Roddick, Murray, Gasquet and Verdasco to get to the final. But Roger will be humming today, I pick a win for the Swiss in straight sets :) .
