Miami – Federer and Nadal in opposite halves of draw

Rafa and Roger will have to advance as far as the finals at the Sony Ericsson Masters event in Miami if we are to see a rematch of last week’s semifinal in Indian Wells.

Roger Federer has been drawn in the top half of the draw: meaning he could face as potential likely seeded opponents Roddick, Monfils, Fish and in the semis, Djokovic.

Rafael Nadal is in the bottom half, and the top seeds he could face would be Stepanek, Nishikori, Tsonga and Murray.

Miami Final – Nadal vs Djokovic

UPDATE – Djokovic beat Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 to claim the Miami title. Congratulations Nole!

Rafael Nadal leads the head to head 16-8 over Novak Djokovic, but as we all know, the Serbian has been in absolute sizzling and unbeatable form in 2011.

However given the way that Rafa swept Fed off the court in the semis, I am inclined to think that this could be his chance to claim his first Miami title. Two sets to one. There you go, putting the rep on the line :)

Miami – Federer vs Simon, Nadal vs Berdych

UPDATE – Federer beat Simons (3-0, retired)

Roger and Rafa face two tough opponents Thursday. If they win, the reward is a match against each other in the semis.

Roger Federer faces a player who has troubled him a lot in the past – Gilles Simon. The Frenchman leads 2-1 in the head to head, but has fallen in the rankings from a promising high of No. 6 in 2009 to No. 27 today. Will be a very interesting match.

Rafael Nadal on the other hand will play 7th seed Tomas Berdych for the first time this year. Nadal has won the last eight times the two met, with a 9-3 lead in the head to head.

The reward for both, if they win will be a Nadal vs Federer match up in the semis. Hope on hope we get that :)

Juan Monaco - Link to ATP Player Profile

Update: Federer beat Monaco 7-6, 6-4 whilst Nadal beat countryman Lopez 6-3, 6-3

Roger Federer has only played Juan Monaco once before – back in 2007, when he beat the Argentine 2 sets to 1.

Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez are good friends on and off the court, but Rafa will be keen to advance, and keep the head to head firmly in his favour (currently 6-2).

Miami – Federer vs Stepanek, Nadal vs Nishikori

Kei Nishikori - Link to ATP Player Profile

UPDATE – Rafael Nadal beat Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4 and Roger Federer beat Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-3

Roger Federer will play veteran Radek Stepanek- a player who beat him the first time they played, back in … 2002! Now the head to head is firmly in Roger’s favour (10-2) and the Swiss should cruise through.

Rafael Nadal has beaten Kei Nishikori in their only two previous encounters.

This match comes soon after a benefit football match that Nishikori organised, which many of the top ATP players (including Nadal and Federer) joined in to raise money for earthquake relief in Japan.

Free Live TV over internet – links at end of this post

Two of the three highest ranking players remaining face off as the world number four (for now – he’ll go to three on Monday) and seven battle for a final spot.

Nadal and Roddick have a head to head of 5 to 2 in favour of the Spaniard – Rafa won the last three and the way he swept Tsonga off the court, to my mind he is back near his very best and a clear favourite to take out this title
