Montreal Final – Djokovic vs Fish

Result - Novak Djokovic beat Mardy Fish, 6-2 3-6 6-4 to win a record fifth Masters in a single year and further extend his lead over Nadal and Federer in the rankings.

Although in theory he had the tougher draw, it was Novak Djokovic who pulled through, again.

Today in Montreal he will play Mardy Fish for a seventh time – and threateningly for the American, Djokivic won all previous matches.

Ticketssaltlakecity.org carry Tickets in Salt Lake City, UT for Dr. Dog, The Utah Symphony: Dvorak's New World, Galactic, Sick Puppies & Lacuna Coil at Ticketssaltlakecity.org in Abravanel Hall, and The Depot.

Still, Mardy Fish will look to take advantage of this dream run and claim an upset. But I pick Djokovic in straight sets.

Cincinnati Draw – Can we dream of a final?

Given their early exits in Montreal, is it premature to hope that Nadal and Federer can make the final in Cincinnati?

Well the draw at least allows for this possibility, though Nadal and Federer have some difficult matches to win if they are to progress so far. Here are their potential partners (based on seed/form):

Rafael Nadal:

2nd Round: Guillermo Garcia-Lopez
3rd Round: Fernando Verdasco
Quarterfinal: Mardy Fish
Semifinal: Andy Murray
Final: Novak Djokovic

Roger Federer:

2nd Round: Juan Martin Del Potro
3rd Round: Viktor Troicki
Quarterfinal: Tomas Berdych
Semifinal: Novak Djokovic
Final: Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic has a better draw, let’s hope that he is drained from all that tennis at Montreal :) . He’ll probably have to beat Gael Monfils to reach that potential semifinal against Roger Federer.

Montreal – Federer vs Tsonga

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - Link to ATP Profile

Match over – Result – Tsonga beat Federer 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 and so Fed joins Nadal and Murray as surprise early exits from the tournament.

Roger Federer has a 4-2 lead over the Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, but the most recent match was a loss in the Quarterfinals in Wimbledon, and Fed will be very motivated to push through to the next round.

Montreal – Federer vs Pospisil, Nadal vs Dodig

UPDATE – Results – Federer beat Pospisil 7-5, 6-3, but Nadal was upset by Dodig 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 and crashes out of the tournament

Roger Federer will be hoping to belatedly celebrate his 30th birthday by beating the 21 year old Canadian, Vasek Pospisil who he will play for the first time.

Rafael Nadal will play Ivan Dodig, ranked 41 in the world. The Croatian has been in good form lately, and is near his all time high ranking having reached the semifinals in Barcelona where he was beaten by Rafa in their only previous encounter.

Rogers Cup Draw Montreal – Tough for Nole

Federer and Nadal must be secretly smiling as they see Novak Djokovic getting a very tough draw in Montreal

The draw is out, and if Nadal and Federer are to meet, it would be in the final – however a lot stands in their way. Here are their potential partners (based on seed/form):

Rafael Nadal:

2nd Round: Ivan Dodig
3rd Round: Fernando Verdasco
Quarterfinal: Tomas Berdych
Semifinal: Andy Murray
Final: Novak Djokovic

Roger Federer:

2nd Round: Juan Ignacio Chela
3rd Round: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Quarterfinal: Nicolas Almagro
Semifinal: Novak Djokovic
Final: Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic on the other hand faces a very tough run – he will probably have to overcome Nikolay Davydenko, Juan Martin del Potro, Gael Monfils, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal if he is to win the title. Wow!

Rafa Twitters, off to North America, Federer turns 30

As Djokovic and Murray set the twitterspace alight, Nadal and Federer held back…

Until this week, when Rafa made his first post on twitter and within two days already has 169,000 followers! Will Fed be next?

Back to tennis – Nadal and Federer are both heading to Montreal to kick off the hard court season. Defending a semifinal and final respectively, they will both be keen to get some play under their belt and not let Djokovic escape further in the ATP ranking battle.

Nadal admitted that his preparation was not perfect, having only a week and a half of practice behind him after allowing time for his tendon injury to recover.

And finally, Happy Birthday to Roger Federer, who turned 30 on Monday. As he put it in a press conference,

“Birthdays happen. They’re part of life. I’m happy I’m getting older. I’d rather be 30 than 20, to be honest. To me it’s a nice time.”

And it sounds like he still has the passion to be at the top another year:

“The fire has always been there clearly. I’ve always enjoyed my matches with both guys, particularly the rivalry with Rafa has been very special. I have massive fire and power to play against those guys.”

Congratulations Andy, and the show rolls on to Cincinnati

Link to Cincinnati Masters website

It was a worthy final at Toronto, with Andy Murray showing he is maturing as a true world class champion, defending his Rogers Cup title with the 7-5, 7-5 win over Roger Federer.

Now the ATP tennis players all pack their bags and take the trip to the Cincinnatti Masters, where another fascinating draw awaits.

The big news for me is that this time Nadal vs Federer would not meet in the final – if they both progress so far, they will play in the semis, whereas Murray and Djokovic would theoretically meet on the other side.

Here are the most probable opponents if all goes to seed:

Rafael Nadal

2nd round: Feliciano Lopez
3rd round: Nicolas Almagro
4th round: Tomas Berdych
Semifinals: Roger Federer
Finals: Novak Djokovic (though Andy Murray would be my form favourite)

Roger Federer

2nd round: James Blake
3rd round: Gael Monfils
4th round: David Ferrer
Semifinals: Rafael Nadal
Finals: Novak Djokovic (or Murray)

Rogers Cup Toronto Final – Murray vs Federer

Andy Murray - Link to ATP Profile

Game over – Andy Murray beat Roger Federer 7-5, 7-5

Well Nadal could not make it to the date at the finals table, but this should be a great match!

Andy Murray has secured the chance to defend his title, and Federer the opportunity to win his 17th Masters Series and some serious credibility before the US Open. Murray has the better of the head to heads (6-5) though Federer has won all of their last three encounters.

I pick Federer in three.

Rogers Cup Toronto – Nadal vs Murray and Federer vs Djokovic

Matches over – for latest live TV click here

Nadal and Federer both had to struggle and fight through their quarters, each losing sets in their opponents (Kohlshchreiber and Berdych respectively) but it is semifinal time and they are here.

Not only that, for the first time in the 129 year history of this event, all four top seeds are still in play so we are in for a great weekend!

Rafa Nadal’s opponent, Andy Murray is in top form, ending Nalbandian’s fine winning streak and looking very strong. Nadal leads the head to head 8-3 but that the last time they met on hard court was in Australia, where Murray knocked out an injured Rafa.

I pick Nadal in three, though that is probably me being hopeful. In my heart of hearts I think Andy could take this one – Nadal will have to really raise his game compared to the quarters!

Novak Djokovic - Link to ATP Profile

Roger Federer plays Novak Djokovic, and as well as a slot in the final, they will be playing for the ATP number two position. It would be great to see Fed win that back on the way to a Nadal vs Federer Sunday!

I pick Fed in three, again, could easily be accused of bias and wishful thinking here!

The Swiss has a 9-5 lead in the head to head, but note that Nole beat him in three of the five times they last met (all 2009).
