Australian Open – Federer vs Del Potro, Nadal vs Berdych

Juan Martin Del Potro - Link to ATP Profile

UPDATE: Result – Roger Federer beat Juan Martin Del Potro 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 and Rafael Nadal beat Tomas Berdych 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3. Nadal vs Federer semi time! :)

Roger Federer plays Juan Martin Del Potro, who seems to be somewhere near the peak of the form he was in before a year or more of troublesome injuries. Before those injuries, he’d beaten Fed twice in a row, though the overall count is against him – 7 matches to 2.

Rafael Nadal will play Tomas Berdych, who he leads 10-3 in the head to head, having won the last seven matches between the two… hopefully a good omen that, knee-permitting, Rafa can progress to the semifinals for the first time in 3 years.

Davis Cup Finals – Nadal vs Del Potro

Rafael Nadal has a 6-3 lead against Juan Martin Del Potro - but does that count for anything in the pressure of a deciding rubber on home soil for the Davis Cup title?

Cincinnati – Federer vs Del Potro

Results – Roger Federer beat Juan Martin Del Potro, 6-3, 7-5. Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez also won, beating Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki, 7-6, 6-7, 10-5

Roger Federer has played Juan Martin Del Potro eight times, winning the first six times but losing their two most recent matches. Those losses – the US Open final in 2009 and in the round robin of the London tour finals came before Del Potro’s extended absence through injury.

Rafael Nadal also debuts in Cincinnati, but in doubles only today as his first singles match (against Julien Benneteau) will be on Wednesday. He’ll join his friend Marc Lopez to play a pair of Serbs (as if he has not had enough of that nationality yet!) – Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki.

Wimbledon – Nadal vs Del Potro, Federer vs Youzhny

Juan Martin Del Potro - Link to ATP Profile

UPDATE – Results – Rafael Nadal beat Juan Martin del Potro, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 and Roger Federer beat Mikhail Youzhny, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3

Nadal will play Del Potro for a chance to progress to the last eight, while Federer has perhaps a slightly easier match against Mikhail Youzhny

Rafael Nadal leads Juan Martin Del Potro by five to three in the head to head, but there was a time back in 2009, before Del Potro’s bad injury, that the Argentinian was all over Rafa – winning three matches in succession and dominating the matches.

Is Del Potro back at that 2009 level? His form suggests yes – this match will be very close and I pick a long, long match going to five sets and Rafa…just…scraping through.

Roger Federer has played Mikhail Youzhny ten times, and won every single match – in fact he only dropped 2 sets, and the most recent of those, in 2003!

Well, times may change and winning runs are for breaking, but still I cannot see Fed letting any sets go on Monday. Federer in three.

Madrid – Federer vs Malisse and Nadal vs Del Potro

Juan Martin Del Potro

Juan Martin Del Potro - Link to ATP Profile

UPDATE – Federer (6-4, 6-3) and Nadal (walkover) both won and progress to quarterfinals

Roger Federer had a real battle in the last round against Feliciano Lopez, coming through by winning two of the three tie breakers.

In theory, this one agaisnt Xavier Malisse should be an easier match, but note that the last and only time the two met on clay (1999!), Malisse won – since then Federer has beaten the Belgian on eight occasions. I pick Fed in two.

Rafael Nadal has struggled in the past against the tall Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, though he still leads the head to head, 5-3.

This will be a real gauge of the level of form each can bring to the court. Rafa in three.

Well the draw is out and what a hard one it is for our two champions!

Indian Wells – Nadal vs Del Potro, Federer vs Djokovic

UPDATE – Nadal won 6-4, 6-4 and Djokovic won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Federer and Wawrinka lost the doubles, 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-7

Rafael Nadal lost the last three matches he played against Juan Martin Del Potro, but still leads the head-to-head 4-3 – it will be a close one today, hope to see Rafa scrape through.

Roger Federer is also looking to break some winning streaks – Novak Djokovic has won his last 18 matches straight – and the last two against the Swiss – though Fed still leads the head-to-head, 13-8.

Once he has had a rest, Federer will come back to the court with Stanislas Wawrinka, to see if the Olympic champions can claim the Indian Wells doubles title against Alexandr Dolgopolov and Xavier Malisse.

US Open – Del Potro the champion!

For only the third time since the “Nadal and Federer reign” started in 2005, the party has been Del Potrocrashed and an “outsider” has won a Grand Slam.

Congratulations to Juan Martin del Potro, a worthy champion who overcame the very best players to deservedly take out this title.

Meantime, Rafa has gone home to rest, and is preparing to enjoy the Davis Cup from the stands as he recovers from the abdominal injury that has bothered him in recent weeks. He confirmed he plans to play Bangkok, Beijing, and Shanghai thereafter – see Nadal’s updated tour schedule here.

To Roger, commiserations for not making the sixth just yet, but we know you’ll be back, so we hope you enjoy some precious time with your beautiful wife and daughters!
