US Open Draw – Nadal and Federer paths to final

US Open Official Website

The draw for the US Open has been made and is now available in full on the the US Open website.

I would say that Rafael Nadal definitely has an easier earlier run than Roger Federer.

Rafa starts in the first four rounds against players he has a good success rate against, though Ljubicic did beat him on the hard courts of Indian Wells earlier this year.

Then he has tougher challenges against Verdasco and Murray before a possible final against Federer. Of course beating Murray and Federer is a massive call, but then this IS the US Open :) .

Roger Federer on the other hand gets some hard opposition from the third round when he will have to battle it out with two players who beat him in their latest encounters (Hewitt and Soderling) as well as an easier Melzer between, before a semi with Djokovic and hopefully a finals date with Rafa.

Well that is the theory, let the mouthwatering reality ensue!

Potential opponents for our champions are as follows (if all goes according to seed):

Rafael Nadal:

Round 1: Gabashvili
Round 2: Istomin
Round 3: Kohlschreiber
Round 4: Ljubicic
Quarterfinals: Verdasco
Semifinals: Murray
Final: Federer

Roger Federer:

Round 1: Dabul
Round 2: Berrer
Round 3: Hewitt
Round 4: Melzer
Quarterfinals: Soderling
Semifinals: Djokovic

Final: Nadal

The US Open men’s seeding is as follows:

1. Rafael Nadal, Spain
2. Roger Federer, Switzerland
3. Novak Djokovic, Serbia
4. Andy Murray, Great Britain
5. Robin Soderling, Sweden
6. Nikolay Davydenko, Russia

Cincinnati Champion – Roger Federer!

Congratulations Roger for a well earned victory today over Mardy Fish, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-4.

It will perhaps count as one of the easier titles Fed has won, given short time on the court including one walk over, but  Fish kept in the game and made it very, very tight. He ran him very close, claiming the first set and pushing him all the way in the second with a follow up tie break.

Finally in the third Fed’s dominance snuck through and he was able to claim the Cincinnati crown for the fourth time.

Federer has thus broken a long drought, and claimed his first Masters title (his 17th) since winning this title in Cincinnati last year.

Since then he’d had a run of three finals losses this year.

Roger now goes fifth in the list of ATP titles (63), even with Bjorn Borg.

A great warm up for the US Open, and hopefully a prelude of more great things to come for our champion!

Cincinnati Masters Final – Federer vs Fish

UPDATE – Federer beat Fish 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-4, to win his fourth Cincinnati Masters title

Mardy Fish - Link to ATP Profile

Roger Federer has the chance to win his 17th Masters Series title today – which would match Andre Agassi as second on the all time list, behind none other than Rafael Nadal on 18. That would add a bit of spice to the head to head by age comparison (click for details).

Federer has played Mardy Fish six times before, with the only win for the American coming when they met in Indian Wells in 2008 (their most recent meeting).

Fish has had a great tournament, having beaten Roddick, Murray, Gasquet and Verdasco to get to the final. But Roger will be humming today, I pick a win for the Swiss in straight sets :) .

Cincinnati Masters – Semifinals – Federer vs Baghdatis

Match over: Federer beat Baghdatis 6-4, 6-3

Roger Federer will not get the opponent today we all hoped for, but that does not mean we won’t enjoy some great tennis. Fed seems to have found some new form and confidence, improving with each match.

The last time the two played, back in Indian Wells earlier this year, Marcos Baghdatis upset Federer in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(4). Before that Fed had won all five previous encounters. Which Baghdatis will show up today? I pick Federer in straight sets, he is on a roll and the Cypriot lacks consistency.

Cincinnati – Federer vs Nadal semi not to be, Rafa crashes out to Baghdatis

Roger Federer played his part, having to play fine tennis to overcome Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5

But a determined Marcos Baghdatis and his fierce serve were too much for Rafael Nadal, who lost 6-4, 4-6 and 6-4.

Cincinnati Masters – Federer vs Davydenko and Nadal vs Baghdatis

Roger Federer will have enjoyed his break after the walkover win yesterday, and will face a stiff challenge from the Russian, Nikolay Davydenko. The two have met 15 times before with just two wins for the Russians. Tellingly though, those two victories were very recent, and he has won two out of the last three encounters. Tough one for Fed.

Rafael Nadal’s opponent is Marcos Baghdatis. Rafa must feel relieved to not be facing the recently in form Tomas Berdych, who the Cypriot knocked out in the last round. The Spaniard has won all six previous matches between the two, and this will be a good match for getting some much needed time on the court with a fierce sparring partner. Wouldn’t count out an upset, but expect Rafa to dig deep and pull through to the semis.

Cincinnati Masters – Nadal vs Benneteau and Federer vs Kohlschreiber

Rafael Nadal will play the second singles match on the Stadium court, immediately following Andy Murray vs Ernests Gulbis. That s should be some time about 3pm local time, 7pm GMT. He plays Frenchman Julien Benneteau, who incredibly perhaps has a 1-1 record with the Mallorcan. The loss came in 2004, so perhaps we should not read too much into that, but I am sure Rafa will be keen to impose a winning record in the head to head.

Roger Federer will play Philipp Kohlschreiber, who has been his hitting partner in recent weeks. They come on after the end of the Nadal match.   Fed has a clean 5-0 head to head, and has never dropped a set to the German.

Cincinnati Masters – Nadal vs Dent and Federer vs Istomin

Denis Istomin

UPDATE: Matches over – Nadal beat Dent and Federer beat Istomin

Click here For Federer vs Dent Live TV at Stockholm Open

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer start their title quest today, with theoretically comfortable warm up matches.

Nadal beat Taylor Dent in the second round of Miami earlier this year, in straight sets and should be good to win as long as he can keep his serve solid. (UPDATE – Match now over, Nadal won 6-2, 7-5)

Federer has not played Denis Istomin since their lone encounter in the Australian Open back in 2006, at which time he won easily in straight sets. The 23 year old Uzbekhi is however at an all time personal high in the rankings at 53, and if he is ever going to pull off a big one this could be it.
