UPDATE – Results: Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer 6-1, 7-5 and Novak Djokovic beat David Ferrer 6-2, 6-1.
Having lost to Ferrer and Djokovic respectively, Nadal and Federer have a chance to recover some form and pride in the play off for third and fourth place. Ferrer and Djokovic will meet in the final.

UPDATE – Result: Federer and Nadal both lost. Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1 and David Ferrer beat an injury-troubled Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2. The two will now meet for the 3rd place play off on Saturday.
A great chance to see which of our champions will be first to shake off the winter cobwebs for the 2012 season. Prize money of USD 250,000 is at stake.
By virtue of their past performances and status, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have been given direct access to the semifinals.
Federer will then play Djokovic, who was able to beat Monfils in the play off for the third slot, while Rafa will get play Ferrer, who overcame Tsonga.
Hope the two can make it through to what would be a December 31st final – nice way to “end” the year!

Roger Federer vs David Ferrer, Saturday, not before 2pm GMT
Rafael and Roger Federer in the same half again, possible semi meet up.
With the Madrid final still to play, the Rome action is well under way.
Here is my pick on seed and form as to who they are likely to have to win in order to meet in the semis and progress to a possible final.
Both Nadal and Federer look to have a relatively easy run to the quarterfinals where they could meet David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych respectively. Having said that, Rafa’s first opponent Bellucci is in great form and that could be a big upset in the making…
Rafael Nadal – likely Rome opponents:
First round: bye
Second round: Tomaz Bellucci
Third round: Mikhail Youzhny
Quarter finals: David Ferrer
Semifinals: Roger Federer
Finals: Novak Djokovic

UPDATE – Match over, Nadal beat Giraldo 6-3, 6-2 to reach the last eight
Rafael Nadal has played the Colombian twice before, with straight set wins on each occasion.
The match will come on at the completion of the one between David Ferrer and Victor Hanescu – that match is due to start not before 1:30pm local time (11:30 am GMT), so I would expect Rafa to come on earliest 2:3opm (12:30pm GMT) – probably a bit later.

Watch out world, Rafael Nadal is back in training .
Great news given the Davis Cup against Belgium coming up (March 4-6) not to mention the US hard court, clay and grass seasons where he is defending a staggering 7000 points given his amazing run of form in 2010.
The injury dated back to the Australian Open match against Spaniard David Ferrer on Jan. 26, but his doctor Ángel Ruiz Cotorro has since cleared him to return to the court.
“I feel quite good, I am going home to Manacor to begin training on the courts,” Nadal said on his official website. “I am going to start training slowly, following a plan, so that there are no setbacks.”
Rafael Nadal was also recently the guest of honour at the official presentation of “Godo”, the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2011. Rafa considers this his “home” tournament, and he won it for five straight years to 2009 before missing out last year, choosing to rest from a heavy schedule. But to the joy of organisers I am sure, he will be back in 2011. Let’s hope his body can handle the strain this year…
At the Barcelona press conference, it was interesting to hear Nadal talk of his disappointment about not being able to complete that “Rafa Slam” – 4 Grand Slams in a row to match an achievement last completed back in 11969 by Aussie legend Rod Laver.
“I was crying in the locker room. I [hated that I had] to go out of the tournament. Last year, I had to do it and it was something I didn’t want to repeat. But from the third game I knew I didn’t have a chance to win. David was playing fantastic and I wasn’t able to run enough to rise to the level to beat him.”
UPDATE – Match over – Murray came back to beat Ferrer, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, 7-6
I am sure we’d all, with the notable exception (perhaps) of David Ferrer, expected to see Rafa playing Murray here, but instead the Spanish hopes will rest on the man from Alicante.
David Ferrer has played Andy Murray 5 times before, with the honours split depending on surface – Ferrer won all 3 clay court matches and Murray both hard court ones.
