UPDATE – MATCH OVER – Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer 6-3, 6-3.
Roger Federer will meet one of his strongest recent rivals, and world no. 3, Novak Djokovic in the final of the ATP Dubai tennis championships.
Although Federer has a 13-7 lead in the head to head, the semifinal loss in the last time they met, at the Australian Opens will be high in his mind. It’s going to be a close one, but I favour the Swiss champion to pull through, 2 sets to 1.

Spain vs Belgium - link to official Davis Cup preview
Rafael Nadal has been named in the Spanish Davis Cup team to play Belgium between March 4 and 6 in Belgium.
His other team mates are David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano López, with Albert Costa as captain. An enviable collection of players!
Rafa hasn’t played in the Davis Cup since the 2009 final in Barcelona when Spain won the title by beating the Czech Republic. It will also be the first time he returns to play since injured ligament sustained during the Australian Open.
Roger Federer will return to Dubai, a tournament he has won four times before.
His major competition will come from Novak Djokovic, defending champion last year and indeed winner in 2009 as well.
Andy Murray has dropped out due to injury.
This could be a big chance for Fed to extend his lead over Nole in the ATP points rankings – he is defending nothing while the Serb can only maintain his points by winning the tournament.
Watch out world, Rafael Nadal is back in training .
Great news given the Davis Cup against Belgium coming up (March 4-6) not to mention the US hard court, clay and grass seasons where he is defending a staggering 7000 points given his amazing run of form in 2010.
The injury dated back to the Australian Open match against Spaniard David Ferrer on Jan. 26, but his doctor Ángel Ruiz Cotorro has since cleared him to return to the court.
“I feel quite good, I am going home to Manacor to begin training on the courts,” Nadal said on his official website. “I am going to start training slowly, following a plan, so that there are no setbacks.”
Rafael Nadal was also recently the guest of honour at the official presentation of “Godo”, the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2011. Rafa considers this his “home” tournament, and he won it for five straight years to 2009 before missing out last year, choosing to rest from a heavy schedule. But to the joy of organisers I am sure, he will be back in 2011. Let’s hope his body can handle the strain this year…
At the Barcelona press conference, it was interesting to hear Nadal talk of his disappointment about not being able to complete that “Rafa Slam” – 4 Grand Slams in a row to match an achievement last completed back in 11969 by Aussie legend Rod Laver.
“I was crying in the locker room. I [hated that I had] to go out of the tournament. Last year, I had to do it and it was something I didn’t want to repeat. But from the third game I knew I didn’t have a chance to win. David was playing fantastic and I wasn’t able to run enough to rise to the level to beat him.”
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will join with two of the “hottest” women on the circuit, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams in the Nike “Clash of the Champions’ on March 8th in Eugene, Oregon (USA).
The event starts at 5:30 p.m., when Maria Sharapova will play Serena Williams in a set of singles. There will then be a mixed doubles set (pairing not announced?), followed by a men’s singles set between Roger and Rafa.
A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will benefit each of the four athletes’ charitable foundations.
Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have announced an exhibition match to be played in Bogotá, Colombia this coming 21st of March.
The match, which has been described as the “most important event in the history of tennis in Colombia,” will be played on a hard-court and is a best of three sets.
The date was carefully chosen by the players to fit in between the Indian Wells and Sony Ericsson tournaments coming up on the North American hardcourt section of the ATP tour.
