UPDATE – Match over – Soderling beat Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4
A repeat of last year’s final, this time in the quarterfinals.
Last year, Roger was able to comfortably beat the Swede in straight sets to capture a historic French Open title.
This year, Soderling returns older, wiser and in the form of his life. Although he has been outclassed by Federer in all 12 previous encounters between the two, this will be a tough match for the defending champion. If there is to be a really big upset this year, this could be it.
Still, my money is on the Number One, Roger Federer. I pick it will go to five sets and that he’ll have to really dig deep, but the Swiss has shown he is also in fine form, and seems to have some gas left in the tank based on recent matches.

Rafa beat Hewitt in straight sets, and faces Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil on Monday.
The last (and only) time the pair met was two years ago, also at the French Open.
Back then Rafa won in straight sets and it is hard to imagine a different outcome today, even though Bellucci has been in excellent form, having beaten Ljubicic in straight sets in the last round
My pick , again is for Rafa to win in three – he is building up a head of steam and looking great for arriving in good knick for the quarter finals.

Roger Federer has played his fellow Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka five times before, and lost just once. On clay though, they are one apiece and this will be a tough one for the champion.
I expect Federer to pull through, but not before losing at least a set… will be a good one to watch, and a great test for Roger as the business end of the tournament starts.

Having seen off Horazio Zeballos, Nadal plays his second match in two days against his old rival Lleyton Hewitt.
There was a time when the Aussie had a big winning head to head record over Rafa, but Nadal has won the last 4 matches between the two and pulled it back to lead 5-4.
On clay, the Spaniard should have few problems.
My pick is Rafa in three, just like last year at the same stage in Roland Garros.

UPDATE – Match over, Nadal won in straight sets.
Rain delayed play on Thursday, so Nadal’s match moved to Friday where he will be first up on the main court. Having comfortably seen off Mina in the first round, he now faces Argentinian Horacio Zeballos.
Nadal and Zeballos have never played before, but Rafa will not be taking things easily against the world 44th ranked Argentinian.
The Mallorcan admitted to nerves in the opening encounter, and having played badly – he’ll come back strong today and I would not like to be on the other side of the court from him.
Expect three short, sharp sets

Rafael Nadal starts today, third on the Suzanne Lenglen court, against Mina of France.
Nadal faces Gianni Mina, a French 18 year old, world ranked 653 - yes, you read that right, whose only hope will be youthful exuberance and a roaring home crowd. This will be a canter for Rafa, a warm up and a good chance to acclimatise to the courts, crowd and the great moment that is Roland Garros.
Mina should consider himself to have done well if he manages to take 3 or 4 games off the King of Clay.

UPDATE – Federer beat Luczak, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 and will face Alejandro Falla of Colombia in the second round.
Roger Federer has his first round match on Monday at the French Open. Rafael Nadal starts on Tuesday – both have matches that could turn out more like practice sessions than professional tennis matches.
The young Polish born Peter Luczak is ranked 123 in the world and faces Federer for the very first time. And what a time and place to face that fire! At 30 years, it would be nothing short of a miracle for him to pull this off. I’ll pick that he will do well to pick up more than 4 games.

So can anyone stop the world’s best ever tennis player from meeting history’s best ever clay court player in the Roland Garros final.
Again, the form, results, talent and sheer power and five-set endurance of Rafael Nadal make him the runaway favourite.
It is clear though that he has a tough draw – with some serious clay court challengers to see off in the early rounds.
He could face (amongst others) the Aussie battler Hewitt, the veteran Croat Ljubicic, in form Spaniard Almagro and/or Fernando Gonzalez by quarter final time, not to mention the extremely talented Fernando Verdasco.
If he sees off all those guys, then he could come up against Roddick, Ferrer, Ferrero or Djokovic before reaching the final. A lot of potential banana skins there!
Federer, on the other hand, comes into this as underdog but he has improved continuously over recent weeks, and will be keen to prove he can win in Paris with or without the man from Manacor in front of him.
He’ll have to beat some good players too in the early rounds – particularly Tipsarevic, Feliciano Lopez, Monfils, Cilic, the really promising Gulbis and his fellow Fed toppler Montanes, and last but not least the man who knocked Rafa out in the 4th round last year, Robin Soderling.
If he reaches the semis, he could face Murray, Youzhny or Tsonga before the finals day.
So what do you think?
Are our main men Roger and Rafa truly unbeatable or do you see the chance of upsets, and if so, who are the big threats?
